DA prosecutes the man who recorded Eric Garner murder, but not the cop who killed him

Family members and friends of Ramsey Orta believe the police are trying to frame and punish him. Why? Orta is the now-famous videographer that captured the murder of Eric Garner at the hands of NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo.

In a phone conversation last year with reporters, Orta, denied police allegations that he slipped a gun into the waistband of a 17-year-old girl Saturday night, moments before police moved in to question him about his presence at a St. George motel that’s known for drug activity.  “When they searched me, they didn’t find nothing on me. And the same cop that searched me, he told me clearly himself, that karma’s a bitch, what goes around comes around,” Orta said, adding later, “I had nothing to do with this. I would be stupid to walk around with a gun after me being in the spotlight.”

Here is what the family has to say:

So Ramsey Orta has a record, and that record will be used in court to justify the accusations currently waged against him. They will point to what he has been accused of in the past – to justify the accusations being made today. He will be prosecuted by the very same District Attorney’s office, who refused to prosecute those who murdered Eric Garner. Ramsey, who has come to “world wide attention” because he filmed the murder – is now being prosecuted by that same District attorney’s office!

He was released and appeared in court as scheduled to answer the charge of “weapons possession”. The prosecution was unable to produce any fingerprints belonging to Ramsey and requested more time to get DNA evidence. Time was granted and they were unable to produce DNA belonging to Ramsey. His court appointed attorney at the time suggested he submit his own. Ramsey agreed, in an attempt to prove his innocence but the prosecution could not say of a certainty the DNA on the weapon in question matched Ramsey’s. With “no prints” and “no DNA” positively matching, one would expect the charge against him should of been dropped. But instead his home was “raided” and he, his mother, and several others in the area were all arrested. They were accused of “possession and distribution of an illegal substance”.

The mother was released shortly after being arrested and bail has just been obtained for the release of Ramsey. You are asked to recognize what is being done to Ramsey cannot be accepted or tolerated. It is police who murder who ought to be arrested and charged – not those who film them!

A couple of things that should be noted – If Ramsey Orta did in fact hand someone a weapon, wouldn’t his DNA and fingerprints be on that weapon? As far as drug charges, Ramsey, according to the family, was never found with drugs on him. If this is true, it would appear that the NYPD is deliberately going after Ramsey Orta. Oh, did I mention that Ramsey was in Rikers Island when it was discovered the prisoners were being served food with rat poison. Fortunately for him, he refused to eat the food?
