Clanton Police Chief Brian Stilwell was arrested Tuesday on charges related to misappropriating Operation Santa Claus funds.

Brian Stilwell, 44, is charged with one count first-degree theft and one count fraudulent use of a credit card, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency stated in a release today.

The charges are related to monetary donations made to the Clanton Fraternal Order of Police lodge’s Operation Santa Claus, which provides Christmas presents to less fortunate families.

Other potential charges will be presented to the grand jury after further investigation, according to ALEA.

Stilwell was booked in the Autauga County Jail. His bond was set at $15,000.

No representative from the city of Clanton could be reached Tuesday afternoon on the charges and Stilwell’s employment status.

Special agents with the State Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation.

SBI is asking anyone who has made monetary donations to the lodge for Operation Santa Claus during the past four years, which was established to raise money to purchase gifts for children, to call the SBI tip line at 800-392-8011. Individuals who were members of the lodge during the past four years are also asked to contact the SBI
